Meet Jay Howell

As a lifelong resident of Centre, Alabama, Jay Howell has dedicated his life to public service and community involvement. He's a 1981 graduate of Cherokee County High School, graduated from Jacksonville State University in 1986 with a B.S. in Criminal Justice and completed the Alabama State Trooper Academy that same year. Through his commitment to protect and serve those he cared for the most, Jay served 25 years as an Alabama State Trooper before finally retiring in 2011.

Jay and his wife, Tonya, own Weiss Lake Concierge Property Management and Vacation Rentals, where they work closely with both tourists and homeowners throughout Centre and the surrounding areas. His dedication to Cherokee County extends beyond his career in law enforcement—he actively serves on multiple boards, including Atrium Floyd Cherokee Hospital, Cherokee County E911, and the Weiss Lake Improvement Association. Additionally, he is a member of the Centre Lions Club and the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce.

A man of faith, Jay and Tonya are devoted members of Tate’s Chapel Baptist Church, where they remain active in their community and church family.

Jay 's Vision for Centre

Support our First Responders

As someone who has spent nearly half my life serving in law enforcement, I deeply value the dedication and sacrifice of our first responders. On day one of my administration, I will meet individually with all department heads to assess their needs, gather their input, and evaluate the status of each department. Our emergency personnel put their lives on the line for us every day. As mayor, I will ensure they have the funding, training, and resources necessary to keep our community safe. I will also work to improve recruitment, retention, and overall support for those who serve and protect us.

Identify, Address, & Prioritize Critical Infrastructure Needs

Centre’s roads, water systems, and public utilities are the backbone of our city. I will develop both short-term and long-term strategic plans to prioritize essential improvements, secure funding for critical projects, and ensure responsible growth and infrastructure planning. Every part of our city deserves proper maintenance, adequate attention, and the resources needed to meet its infrastructure needs.

Advocate & Initiate Efforts to Support Local Beautification

A cleaner, more attractive city benefits everyone in countless ways. I will lead city-wide beautification efforts by enhancing and preserving our historic downtown, revitalizing neglected properties, and fostering a community we can all be proud to call home. To achieve this, I plan to establish a beautification committee made up of dedicated citizens—like myself—who recognize the charm and potential of our small town.

Upgrade & Expand Existing Parks & Recreational Assets

Providing first-class parks and recreational facilities for our families and youth will be a top priority under my leadership. I will collaborate with city leaders and employees to enhance park amenities, expand recreational programs, and create more opportunities for outdoor activities that unite our community and showcase our natural recreational assets.

Commit to an Open-Door Policy & Increase Government Transparency

Many candidates for public office promise greater transparency, but few follow through. I believe in open and honest government, and as your mayor, I will ensure that commitment becomes a reality. Public meetings will be easily accessible online through the city’s official website and all city-operated social media platforms. We will enhance communication with residents and implement both physical and digital tools to keep you informed about city decisions, activities, and spending. Transparency isn’t just a promise—it’s a responsibility I will uphold every day.

Ensure Fiscal Responsibility & Cut Wasteful Spending

Every taxpayer dollar should be spent wisely. As a business owner, I have firsthand experience in responsible budgeting, eliminating wasteful spending, and ensuring every dollar is used efficiently. I will bring this same financial discipline to City Hall. Additionally, I will ensure that our Finance Committee meets regularly to monitor the city’s financial health, develop strategic economic plans, and promote effective financial management.
